Hello! I figured it was time to update again. I am now 8 weeks post-op…well, minus one day. 🙂 Things are really starting to go well now. Last night was the first time I could walk down the stairs normal. Going up is MUCH easier than going down. I have to do some stretching as my ankle has gotten tight over the last year from not walking proper. Stretching is the worst for me. I’ve never liked it. Even after doing martial arts for years, I still don’t like it. It is important to my recovery though, so I am doing it. Sometimes we have to do things we don’t like. Harumph!
I took a picture of both knees again so you can see how it is coming compared to the left knee. I just got back from physical therapy today and I’m making great progress. I still have full extension as well as hyper-extension now. Yay! That is a good thing, by the way. I am up to 125 degrees of bend. I think once the rest of the swelling goes down, I will get the last 10 degrees of bend.
I was talking to my therapist today tell her that the one part that still feels “full” is an arch right above my knee cap. She said it is the patella sac and that is the last part that absorbs back into the body. It can take 6-8 months for that to fluid to be absorbed. When you use the cryo-cuff, the cold water makes the fluid stiff like gel, but as you start moving again and it warms up, it doesn’t feel as stiff.
My therapist is very happy that I’m working with a trainer at 24 Hour Fitness. He is helping me with exercises to strengthen my knee as well as the rest of me. He is giving me exercises that I can do at home and in my hotel room as well as the gym. With having both the ACL and the PCL removed, I really have to focus on strengthening the rest of the muscles around my knee.
I am going to run, but if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to leave me a note. I will be happy to respond. Take care!
